Cream 80-column punch card with square corners and a yellow stripe. The card reads “General Purpose 8 Field” in the right margin of the card. The card’s columns are divided into has 8 fields, each labelled between the 6 and 7 rows in series using the english spelling of numbers from one to eight. Each of the 8 fields is again divided into 4 more subdivisions. The first three of these subdivisions are three columns wide, with the last subdivision only a single column wide.
At the top of the card several rows of column numbers are provided from 1-80, 1-60 and 1-45. Each of these label the printed characters at the top of the card, when this card was used in a card punch which had printing capabilities. Dependent on the capabilities of this printer, it may have printed 45, 60 or 80 columns of characters at the top of the card corresponding to the punched columns below.
The card has column numbers for every column, below the 0 and 9 rows. The entire punchable and printable area of the card is encompassed as part of a large table with many column borders denoting the various subdivisions of the card. This card is cut in the top left hand corner.
The archive holds a number of punched cards of this specimen. Punched cards are punched with sets of information in various fields. Alphabetic characters are encoded in a binary-coded-decimal. The printing at the top of the cards appears to be 45 columns wide and largely matches the values on the card with some printed fields missing from the punching.
