Orange 80-column aperture punch card printed for the United States of America Department of Defence with rounded corners with a card cut on the top left hand corner. This is a standard United States Department of Defence - Dual Purpose Engineering Card made by Soni Card. The Department of Defence had several printers manufacturing these cards including IBM and Langan, specimens of which can be found elsewhere in this archive.

This card is an Aperture Card with microfilm negatives of an engineering drawings attached between columns 54 and 76. All specimens in the collection of this particular card style have been punched and have microfilm attached.

The card is divided into a large number of fields for recording information about a microfilm of the engineering document attached to intended to be attached to the microfilm aperture. There are with two sets of possible field combinations (referred to as the “Upper legends” and “Lower Legends” by the card). The fields in use are determined by the characters punched in column 51, a “H” for the upper legends and a “T” for the lower legends. There are five additional punch positions marked inside the microfilm area of the card; “Revised”, “Rejected”, “Camera Microfilm”, “Image Plane - Back”, “Image Plane - Front”. A full list of fields in the upper and lower legends is outlined in the appendix below.

The title “Dual Purpose Engineering Document Card” is printed in the middle of the card underneath the logo of the United States Department of Defence. The card is printed with “DD FORM 1562” and “1 JUNE 1966” in the left margin. The card number, “8009”, the “Soni Card” logo, “A product of Kleer Vu Industries, New York, N.Y. 20026”, “US Patent 3291669” and “Printed in U.S.A.” are printed in the bottom margin. All printed columns are numbered below the 0 row, and below the 9 row.
