This manual of operation provides a detailed technical and operational guide to IBM’s Type 63 punch, a machine designed to convert information recorded on IBM punched cards into punched tape, enabling rapid and accurate transmission of business data between locations. It explains the machine’s operating features, basic and advanced punching methods, control-panel wiring, and numerous applied examples—from selective skipping and recoding techniques to complex multi-card document-writing workflows—arranged progressively to build operator understanding. The manual also describes the broader information-transfer system in which the Type 63 operates and outlines the preparation of tape for automated document writing on printing telegraph machines.
The number 712 has been handwritten on the front cover of this copy of the manual in red marker. A former owner’s name is also written on the front cover in pen. The covers show some wear marks in several places, in particular at the spine. Otherwise, this copy is in good condition with minimal signs of wear or discolouration. All pages are intact and legible, the binding is secure but many pages were inconsistently trimmed during production, resulting in uneven margins, and skewed printing on some pages.
